Gayle Mill

A Heritage Gem

Looking for things to do and places to go in the Yorkshire Dales? Come to Gayle Mill for a day out with a difference!

Beneath the peace and tranquillity of National Park's beautiful hillsides lie the real, sometimes dark stories of Wensleydale's past. Discover at Gayle Mill how man fought to tame this unforgiving landscape and exploit its water-powered energy at the very start of the Industrial Revolution.

Gayle Mill tells a unique story of survival against all the odds, as it reinvented itself time and again, and how finally it was rescued from total dereliction through the 2004 BBC "Restoration" series.

Enjoy watching in action the fully restored Victorian woodworking machinery and the oldest working turbine in the UK in its original location, and listen to the fascinating stories about how the owners, workers, inventors and entrepreneurs kept the Mill working for over 200 years.
